There have been many innovative design features invented especially for this low-cost, low-power laptop, one of which is the LCD screen which uses adjusted DVD technology. This goes to show that a cheaper, better laptop could easily be made for the general public. What a save on power that would be. A Taiwanese computer company called Quanta Computer manufactures basic laptops especially for this programme. They are distributed by a social welfare organization called One Laptop Per Child (OLPC).

The XO-1 version has a camera, microphone, stylus/touch pad and a long-range Wi-fi, with an e-book function that runs on very low power. To keep the power consumption low, this laptop has all motor driven parts omitted. This includes the fan, optical media and floppy drive. For the same reason, when in e-book mode the system goes to sleep between page uses.
